Canada Geese
Canada geese are large; wild geese with blackheads; black necks; white cheeks; white under their chins; and brown bodies. The Arctic and temperate regions of North America are its native habitats; and northern Europe occasionally receives them during migration across the Atlantic.
The Canada Horn is among our most well-known waterfowl. Canada Geese passing over in V-formation – northbound in spring; southbound in fall – are universally recognized as signs of season change in many regions. Once considered a symbol of wilderness; this goose has adapted well to civilization; nesting around ponds and golf courses; in some places; it has even become a nuisance. The Cackling Goose is considered a separate species since the smaller forms vary greatly in size.
A legend surrounds the droppings of the Canada goose. A bird releases almost a kilogram of waste every day!
Habitat
Their nests are located near water; and they spend their winters close to water as well. In wooded country; tundra; fresh marshes; salt marshes; and lakes provide nesting habitats. Feeds often in open fields; especially during winter. The species has also been found in suburban ponds and city parks recently.
Food
Plant material makes up almost all of the material. The species feeds on a wide variety of plants. Feeds on grasses; sedges; aquatic plants; as well as seeds and berries; eats many cultivated grains (particularly at refuges where crops are planted for geese). Occasionally; it eats insects; mollusks; crustaceans; and small fish.
Nesting
They may mate for life. Males defend territory by lowering their heads almost to the ground with their bills slightly raised and open; hissing. They also pump their heads up and down as they stand. Females choose a nest site (usually slightly elevated; dry ground near water) that has good visibility. A variety of nests are found on cliff ledges; in muskrat houses; in trees; and on artificial platforms. A nest is a slight depression surrounded by shallow bowls of sticks; grass; weeds; and moss; lined with down. Nests are built by females.
