Moraine Lake
Moraine lake is nestled away in the Rockies in Banff National Park. The lake is a short drive (14-km) from Lake Louise village. Due to the weather conditions; the road to Moraine Lake is closed for vehicles from October to late May.
The car park at Moraine Lake fills quickly. In peak season it is not uncommon that Canada Parks closes the road around 7 am in the morning due to the car park being full. It is recommended to plan a trip to Moraine Lake in advance and attempt to get on a coach (bus) tour or arrive early.
The Lake
Moraine Lake is a glacially-fed lake; like most in Banff National Park. The lake is situated in the valley of the ten peaks. The elevation of the lake is approx 1884 meters above sea level. The lake surface is roughly 50 hectares. The lake is only 50 feet deep however no swimming or fishing is allowed in the lake.
Winter Access
Winter access to Moraine Lake is possible with proper trip planning. There are several forms of transportation that will get you to Moraine Lake.
- Snowshoeing
- Skiing (both cross country and downhill skis)
- Cycling (preferably with fat tires)
The road to Moraine Lake is windy and mainly flat; however it is an avalanche country and therefore the proper equipment is required for backcountry access in winter conditions.
The Lake Color
The vivid colour of Moraine Lake is from the glaciers that feed the lake. This water primarily comes from Fay Glacier via the Larch Creek.
Activities
Fishing and swimming are not allowed at the lake. Canada Park regularly patrols the area. There is hiking in the area however it is best to check with the visitor information office as there are normally grizzly bears in the area.
Groups of four or more people are normally required at the hiking trails due to the wildlife. Canada parks do give tickets and fines for people travelling with less than the required numbers.
There is a Canoe service at the lake; where you can rent a canoe or get one provided with the onsite lodge accommodation. Seeing the lake by Canoe allows for other views that are not available on foot around the lake.
