Pygmy Owl
Pygmy owls are some of the smallest owls in North America; but they are fierce beasts. A hunter often preys on songbirds. Dark brown and white; with long tails and rounded heads; these owls have yellow eyes that are piercing.
Pygmy owls hunt primarily at dawn and dusk during the day. Swooping down on its prey while sitting high up in trees. When flying; the owl is virtually silent.
Finding these Owls
This is how these owls are usually seen because songbirds mob them as a defensive mechanism. Usually when songbirds make a lot of noise and are close to one another; an owl is nearby. They will be mobbed by songbirds like hummingbirds; wrens; warblers; jays and blackbirds.
Pygmy owls cache their food and hide it in trees. The Northern Pygmy-Owl is known to take prey three times its own size such as Northern Flickers; Northern Bobwhites; and even chickens.
In the mountains of western North America; these owls are common. They are active during the day and sleep at night. These owls are small and difficult to find; so they can only be seen if songbirds mob them.
