Two Jack Lake Blue Hour

Two Jack Lake is a beautiful green lake in Banff National park with a fantastic view of Mount Rundle. The landscape attracts all kinds of people from young to old for its accessibility and its clean atmosphere.

The lake is located opposite the highway from Banff and makes a superb place to catch the sunrise and sunset. Photographers capture Astro-photography and the Aurora Borealis at this location catching the milky-way at the beginning of the season.

Two Jack Lake is one of the most photographed lakes in Banff National park and ranks in terms of tourist attractions.

Two Jack Lake is known for various activities including:

  • fishing
  • canoeing
  • kayaking
  • Swimming
  • camping
  • Ice skating
  • Photography

Photography

The opportunities at Two Jack Lake are worth investing some time in. Firstly there are plenty of beautiful scenes with Sunrise and Sunset however the seasons play an important part in the photography at Two Jack Lake.

Secondly winter photography is rewarding at this location and it is best to get there just as the lake is freezing before the snowfalls.

Best time to visit

The area around Two Jack Lake is open all year round. This makes the lake accessible all year round and is easy to get to in the fall; winter and spring months. The lake is frozen from late November to May and may or may not have snow on the top. The wind can blow the snow off.

Facilities

There are two car parks at Two Jack Lake. Some washrooms are open in the busy season. Typically the washrooms are closed in the winter season. Consequently during the summer months parking can be a problem and there is no overflow parking like Lake Louise. If there is no parking there is not much choice but to continue to the next location.

How this photo was captured?

Basically we planned the shot with the photographer’s Ephemeris; so that the sun would be rising opposite Mount Rundle. Sunrise was 6:11 am. I left Calgary at 3 am on August 4th; 2019 and travelled to Banff with the plan of seeing if the photos would be any good at Two Jack Lake.

On arrival the surroundings were black and the sun was not up yet. Setup the camera on the tripod and got the camera ready to take a time-lapse series of photos. Luckily; the weather forecast was for clear skies with no rain and good sunlight.

The Time-lapse

Started the time-lapse around 5:30 am and kept the time-lapse going for over an hour. Two Jack Lake blue hour photo was part of this time-lapse that was taken around 5:37 am while I was adjusting the zoom and getting the composition correct.

I was in a position on the lake bank where the rocks were just staggered in front of me and giving the fore element to the photographs. (time-lapse under videos.)

As the time-lapse was getting into the higher numbers; the crowds started to appear and people were getting close to getting into my images or knocking the tripod. I got very uneasy as people were watching my camera and seeing what I was doing. Others alongside me had the same problem. People taking selfies in front of our shots and destroying the time-lapses that people were working on.

The photos for the time-lapse went on from 05:30 to past 7 am with the sun rising on Mount Rundle. I didn’t notice the sun rising on the mountain while standing at the lake; but in the post; you can see the sun rising and Mount Rundle starting to glow.

The time-lapse consists of over 900 photographs taken in 90 minutes; with 30 frames per second the time-lapse are about 29 seconds long.
