Andy Denton: Award-Winning Wildlife and Fine Art Photographer
Andy is a passionate wildlife and fine art photographer originally from England, now based in Calgary, Canada. Growing up in Robin Hood country, Andy developed a strong connection to nature early on through his involvement in the Cub Scouts and Scouts. During his childhood and teenage years, he earned numerous merit badges in hiking, map reading, navigation, kayaking, canoeing, skiing, and outdoor survival. As one of the youngest Scouts to receive the Chief Scout’s Award in the 1980s, Andy honed leadership skills as a patrol leader and mentor.
His outdoor skills extended into his education, where he took Outdoor Pursuits courses during his O levels, learning to plan hikes, camping trips, and survival techniques. After leaving the Scouts, Andy played ice hockey across England, Scotland, and Wales, and followed professional teams like the Nottingham Panthers. At 18, he moved on to university in Staffordshire, earning a degree in computers, which led to a career in the Oil and Gas industry.
In the 1990s, Andy relocated to Calgary, where his love for skiing and mountain biking flourished. He became a certified ski instructor and coach, spending winters at Lake Louise and Sunshine Village in the Canadian Rockies. His passion for fast-action sports inspired him to begin photographing amateur ski racers, including his daughters, starting in 2012. This sparked a deep interest in photography, leading Andy to pursue advanced online courses and a master class in fine art photography by 2019.
