Bison

The Difference between Bison and Buffalo

Bison and Buffalo are members of the same family of oxlike mammals; however the Buffalo is native to South Asia and Africa. Bison is native to North America and Europe. A Bison has a hump at the shoulders, while the Buffalo does not, and the horns are also different. Bison horns are smaller and less curved than buffalo horns, which can be more than 5 feet long. Another difference between the two is that Bison have beards whereas Buffalos do not.

Andy spent many years photographing the Bison in Edmontons Elk Island National Park. The best time to see bison is during the rut in July. It is best to stay inside your vehicle while taking pictures during the Rut because the Bison are very dangerous. In order to get the shot, we open the sunroof and stand on the front seats with the long lens. During the Rut, the older male Bisons are very loud and can be heard from quite a distance. Bison can usually be seen in the Bison loop area, and although there are red seats there, it is not recommended to sit during the Rut.
