How was this photo captured?

Basically, we planned the shot with the photographer’s Ephemeris so that the sun would be rising opposite Mount Rundle. Sunrise was 6:11 am. I left Calgary at 3 am on August 4th, 2019 and travelled to Banff with the plan of seeing if the photos would be any good at Two Jack Lake. On arrival, the surroundings were black, and the sun was not up yet. Set up the camera on the tripod and got the camera ready to take a time-lapse series of photos. Luckily, the weather forecast was for clear skies with no rain and good sunlight.

The Time-lapse

Started the time-lapse around 5:30 am and kept the time-lapse going for over an hour. The blue hour photo was part of this time-lapse that was taken around 5:37 am while I was adjusting the zoom and getting the composition correct. I was in a position on the lake bank where the rocks were just staggered in front of me and giving the foreground to the photographs. (time-lapse under videos.)

As the time-lapse was getting into the higher numbers, the crowds started to appear, and people were getting close to getting into my images or knocking the tripod over. I got very uneasy as people were watching my camera and seeing what I was doing. Others alongside me had the same problem. People are taking selfies in front of our shots and destroying the time-lapses that people were working on.

The photos for the time-lapse went on from 05:30 to past 7 am with the sun rising on Mount Rundle. I didn’t notice the sun rising on the mountain while standing at the lake, but in the post, you can see the sun rising and Mount Rundle starting to glow.

The time-lapse consists of over 900 photographs taken in 90 minutes; with 30 frames per second, the time-lapse is about 29 seconds long.
