Vermilion Sunrise

The Vermilion Lakes are a collection of three lakes west of Banff that reflect Rundle Mountain.

Banff National Park’s iconic spots along these lakes are the most photographed. The golden hours of the day are when photographers seek out the lakes to capture sunbeams; sunrises; and sunsets.

Vermilion lakes are best photographed early in the morning before the wind starts. Reflection shots are breathtaking in golden light and calm water.

Wildlife

Vermilion lakes are also home to an abundance of wildlife that attracts photographers. Birds in the area are attracted to the marshes around the lakes.

Marshlands are also prime habitats for wildlife. Elk; Mule Deer; Coyotes; Moose; and bears are the most common animals in the area. The area has also seen rare sightings of Wolves in recent years.

There are Bald Eagles; Ospreys; Loons; buffleheads; and even Great Gray Owls in the area. The area is also home to the usual common birds. Also look for Blue Herons; red-tailed hawks; and water dippers.

Fishing; Hiking and Biking

Paddle boards and kayaks are used to explore the marshes.

In Banff; you can rent paddle boards; canoes; and kayaks. Vermilion lakes can even be reached from Banff on the Creeks.

Vermilion Lakes are also popular for biking. Rental bikes are available at bike shops in Banff.

During the evening glow; people can also walk their pets and hike along the lakes. Fenland Trail connects to Vermilion Lakes Drive (2.5km); where you can walk to the docks.

Lakes are popular fishing spots during the fishing season. It is required to have a license; and the regulations can be found on the Alberta Website.

There are also great stargazing opportunities at Vermilion Lakes. Light pollution from Banff is relatively low; making it a great place for Astro Photography. Aurora Borealis can even be captured during intense storms when the Aurora is overhead.

Methane bubbles can be seen in frozen lakes during the winter when the lakes freeze.
